1. В англійській мові (на відміну від української) числівники — це незмінні слова.

Порівняйте:

two chairs — два стільці
two doors — двоє дверей
between two trees — між двома деревами
a thousand kilometres — тисяча кілометрів
two thousand kilometres — дві тисячі кілометрів


2. Як кількісні, так і порядкові числівники у реченні звичайно виконують функцію

означення до іменника:

We live on the first floor.
I'm twelve years old.
Two heads are better than one.

3. Кількісний числівник може бути постпозитивним означенням до іменника.

Така конструкція звичайно вживається для позначення

номерів параграфів,
сторінок,
розділів,
астин,
а також автобусів і трамваїв,
квартир, будинків,
розмірів взуття,
одягу тощо.

4. Означуваний іменник у цьому випадку вживається без артикля.

Коли означуваний іменник опускається або його немає, числівники можуть виконувати у реченні

всі функції, властиві іменникам:

Кількісні числівники від 1 до 12 включно, а також числівники a hundred, a thousand, a million прості.

Кількісні числівники від 13 до 19 включно утворюються додаванням суфікса -teen  до відповідних простих числівників першого десятка:

four — fourteen; nine — nineteen 

У двох випадках додавання суфікса -teen супроводжується зміною звуків кореня: three — thirteen; five — fifteen. При додаванні суфікса -teen до числівника eight кінцеве t опускається.

eight — eighteen

Числівники з суфіксом -teen вимовляються з двома наголосами — на першому складі і на суфіксі, якщо за ними не йде іменник:

How many children are present?  

Nineteen. 

Коли ці числівники вживаються перед іменником, то вони вимовляються з одним наголосом на першому складі:

There are seventeen books on the shelf.

Числівники, що означають десятки (20—90), утворюються додаванням суфікса -ty до відповідних простих числівників:

seven — seventy; nine — ninety

При додаванні суфікса -ty у деяких числівників змінюється вимова або написання кореня:

two  — twenty 

three — thirty 

four — forty 

five — fifty 

eight — eighty

Решта кількісних числівників складені. Десятки з одиницями утворюються так само, як і в українській мові, але пишуться через дефіс (рисочку):

25 — двадцять п'ять — twenty-five

59 — fifty-nine

У складених числівниках між сотнями (тисячами і мільйонами) і десятками (або одиницями, якщо немає десятків), що йдуть за ними, у будь-якому розряді вживається сполучник and:

342 — three hundred and forty-two

4,125 — four thousand one hundred and twenty-five

Перед числівниками hundred, thousand і million замість числівника one часто вживається неозначений артикль.

При цифровому зображенні кількісних числівників кожні  три  розряди  відокремлюються  комами: 5,382;

1,250,701.

Кількісні числівники hundred, thousand і million не вживаються у формі множини, тобто не мають закінчення -s:

ten thousand books

Five hundred schoolchildren were present at the meeting.

Проте, коли зазначені числівники виражають неозначену кількість, вони вживаються у множині із закінченням -s. У цих випадках після числівника звичайно йде іменник з прийменником of:

Thousands of people took part in the demonstration.

Millions of Ukrainian schoolchildren go in for sports.
